CRGE Director Ruth E. Zambrana Recognized as One of Hispanic Business’s Elite Woman for 2007

COLLEGE PARK, MD—Hispanic Business selected Dr. Ruth E. Zambrana, Director of the Consortium on Race, Gender and Ethnicity (CRGE) at the University of Maryland, as one of its 15 Elite Women for 2007.  Hispanic Business will honor Dr. Zambrana  at its Woman of the Year Gala on April 26 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

At the gala, Dr. Zambrana is a panelist in the opening session and will speak on “The Echo of the Boom.”  Her remarks will address the Baby Boomers’ retirement phenomenon that is creating vacancies in high-profile positions in every niche of the country.  She will emphasize how this is the perfect opportunity for Hispanic working women to fill these spots.

The 15 Elite Women chosen for this award have made a significant professional contribution in their respective fields. Dr. Zambrana has focused her research  on  inequalities in access to health care, education and the intersections of quality of services, socioeconomic status and unfavorable outcomes for predominantly historically under-represented groups.  Dr. Zambrana hopes to continue her scholarship about inequality in the public systems that serve Hispanics and other people of color.

“Dr. Zambrana is committed to fostering the advancement of the Hispanic community,” stated Jesús Chavarria, Publisher and CEO of Hispanic Business Magazine. “She epitomizes the success, drive, hard work, and civic involvement so many women, regardless of their ethnicity, aspire to.”  Dr. Zambrana attributes her success to support from mentors and family members.  Yet she states that “We have few role models in the academy, or in any educational institution, to help and encourage Latinas.”

In addition to her position as CRGE Director, Dr. Zambrana  is a Professor in the Department of Women’s Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park and an affiliate faculty in the Departments of Sociology and African American Studies.  Additionally, she is Adjunct Professor of Family Medicine at University of Maryland Baltimore, School of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine.  Dr. Zambrana earned her Ph.D. from Boston University in 1977 and has worked in the area of health disparities of low-income women and children for over 25 years.

CRGE is a nationally prominent research organization that promotes scholarship as well as faculty and graduate student development across the University of Maryland campus. CRGE’s interdisciplinary work explores the intersections of race, gender, ethnicity and other dimensions of difference as they shape identities, behavior and complex social relations.
